Ninjastep- Production Line

I rarely do posts about one song, but I heard a song today so epic that is a worthy of such rare acknowledgment. It is by Ninjastep- a dubstep group out of New Zealand and it takes an amazing trombone solo and turns into an sick dubstep jam. The womp is pretty subtle and the trombone groove is consistently epic. It makes me want to pick up my old trombone from high school and attempt to learn this dankness. This song is like big band dubstepped and it is unlike anything I've ever heard. Check it out.

The Best Albums of 2010

Here are my best albums of 2010. Later in the week, I'll release the best mixtapes and EPs. Cheers:

   1. The Chemical Brothers- Further

After two relatively unsuccessful albums, The Chemical Brothers threw away the dance album formula that they had stuck to for their whole career and instead crafted an album that takes electronic music further than ever before. The music in this album always feels like its going to explode, but never quite does, and instead it takes listeners on an audible journey.
Chemical Brothers - Another World by ImaCrea

   2. Kanye West- My Dark Twisted Fantasy

Kanye just kills it on almost every song of this album. He’s cocky, he’s pissed, he’s sad, he’s partying. The album has all the ups and downs of the superstar’s life and always finds the right words and the right beats to feat the moment.  It’s everything the title says it is and more.
Kanye West - Runaway (ft. Pusha T) by theearlynerd

   3.   The Roots- How I Got Over

The best hip hop band out there delivers one of their best albums ever. It’s got soul, and dank hip hop flows about the problems with inner city life. How I Got Over never quits, just about every song is incredible and there are plenty featured artists such as John Legend and Monsters of Folk to keep the sound fresh.
The Roots - Walk Alone (feat. Truck North, P.O.R.N. & Dice Raw) by Edere
4.
4. Vampire Weekend- Contra

With their sophomore album, Vampire Weekend developed their sound and delivered. This album was my jam last winter. I tried Horchata for the first time because of this album. Like Horchata, it is sweet with just the right amount of depth; It is pop music at its very best.
Vampire Weekend - Contra - Horchata by RowanSmith1

5.       Gorillaz- Plastic Beach

From the very beginning with Snoop Dog’s “Welcome to the world of the plastic beach,” to the end this album delivers uniquely surreal music that never sounds the same. A concept album with a thinly veiled enviromentalist message, it is The Gorrilaz’ most successful album to date.
Gorillaz: Stylo (feat Mos Def & Bobby Womack) by SUPMAG

6.       The Black Keys- Brothers

Just when you thought pure rock n roll was dead in 2010, the Black Keys release an album of such unadulterated rock with just enough soul and dynamic riffs to keep you wanting more throughout the entire album.
The Black Keys - Tighten Up by HighestCulture

7.       Broken Bells-Broken Bells

From The High Road at the start and on, this album delivers amazing pop-rock music. Dangermouse and James Mercer (The Shins) seem to be an almost perfect pairing.

8.       Deadmau5- 4x4=12

Deadmau5 delivers dubstep, and moar great electronic music. Raise Your Weapon is probably the song of the year. Mau5 also wins for best stage setup of the year: the anamorphic cube will live in on in dance music history for a long time.
  Deadmau5 - Raise Your Weapon (Dubstep) Thissongissick.com by Thissongissick.com

9.       Sleigh Bells- Treats

It’s noisy rock riffs with angelic pop vocals and it works. Treats is a real treat. Excuse the bad pun, but it really is.
Sleigh Bells - Rill Rill by marinak

10.   Skrillex- Scary Monster and Nice Sprites

The album is at once the battle between good and evil as it is the contrast between dance and dubstep. Skrillex’s scream-like womps may be offputting to the first time listener, but his music is brilliant.

Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites - Skrillex by Blokk
11.   Ratatat- LP4

With LP4 Ratatat explores some never before explored audio territory. Their sound varies much more in this album than it ever has before. From the bubbling of Neckbrace to the power-riffs of Drugs it is great music all around.
  Ratatat - Neckbrace by apocalypseparty

12.   Kid Cudi- Man on the Moon II

It may be depressing hip hop and devoid of any chart toppers, but it’s definitely honest and  great music. Various features help him expand on his musical range.
Kid Cudi - Rev Of Ev by diptnyc

13.   Magnetic Man- Magnetic Man

It’s got the dance anthem of the year: I Need Air. It’s got dubstep of just about every variety. It’s got moments of angelic beauty and moments of devilish womps. We should all look forward to what this dubstep supergroup comes out with next.
Fire - Magnetic Man by ninery

14.   Crystal Castles (2010)

Crystal Castles’ second title album has unlistenable moments of epilectic inducing screaming, moments of  rave-climaxing beats, and moments of haunting strangeness. Part punk, mostly electro, even though the lead singer is like the girl from The Ring on crack it’s pretty much awesome.
Crystal Castles - Baptism by sinasohrab

15.   MGMT- Congratulations

Though nothing like their first breakthrough album, MGMT new Sid Barret-esque sound on this album is worthy of recognition.
MGMT - Flash Delirium by Stayloose

16.   Damian Marley and Nas- Distant Relatives

Damian Marley and Nas are an almost dream-like pairing. You have your pissed off rapper and the chill rasta jams juxtaposed in the music. Although there are moments when Distant Relatives gets too preachy, it is a successful album.
Damian Marley & Nas - As We Enter by Romaino

17.   Matt and Kim- Sidewalks

This album is pretty much an expansion of the simple but catchy sound that brought these two fame with “Daylight,” but who said there was anything wrong with that?

Matt & Kim - Cameras by AtothaA

18.   Arcade Fire- The Suburbs

Indie darlings Arcade Fire release an album to enchant people in suburbs everywhere.
Arcade Fire - The Suburbs by Fantastic Plastic Mag
19.   The New Pornographers- Together

Folk rock is rarely this unique and full of variety.
THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS- Your Hands (Together) by goripack

20.   Rusko- OMG

It has two of the most epic dubstep anthems of the years in Raver’s Special and Woo Boost. But, as many moments of epicness it has, it has just as many moments of selloutedness which is what is preventing it from reaching higher on the list. Note to DJs: don’t do songs with Gucci Mane!
Rusko - Raver's Spesh by StevenFrank

The Sound of Dubstep

I recently downloaded the Ministry of Sound's The Sound of Dubstep album and UKF Dubstep (a dubstep mixtape). Let me tell you, these albums are chock full of wompy dankness. If you like dubstep at all- get these now. Here are some gems I discovered*:

*For full effect, these must be played on the loudest speakers you have access to.

Bon Iver - Woods (Starkey Remix) by BallgameTracks

Luvstep. Not only is it an amazing name for the romantic dubstep subgenre, it is also an awesome mixtape by Dirty South and Flufftronix out on Mad Decent (Diplo's label.) There is not much music that is more emotional than these songs as they are packed with powerful love-womps....pretty epic!

Below is just a preview but you can buy the full thing here:

Deadmau5 Live in London

Last night, I saw Deadmau5 again. I feel like a modern day "dead head" because I've seen the mau5 3 times this year! But, everytime has been a completely different experience and amazing.
According to mau5's Facebook: "Fact: that was the biggest show we've ever produced. and probably one of the best. THANK YOU SO MUCH UK!!!! amazeballs!" It was definitely an epic show- he played all of the new music- and Sofi was there to rap live for One Trick Pony and Sofi Needs a Ladder. The LED cube was in full force as usual-- I will never get over the cube, I think it has to be the most epic stage setup any artist has ever had. It is amazing.
There was this catwalk that ran into the middle of crowd and at one point, mau5 stopped all the music and walked to end of it where there was this giant LED screen. He started using it as a controller and djing from there. It was awesome because it was really improvisational music and you could see what he was doing on the screen. The lasers surrounding him were epic as well.
The one bad part about the concert was that I showed up too late for Magnetic Man. Luckily I saw Zane Lowe and he was raging hard- playing everything from heavy dubstep to dance classics like Sandstorm.
Well, I took a lot of videos-- more than I have ever taken at a concert-- so check it out. Below is "Raise Your Weapon"  and "One Trick Pony" and you can see all of the other ones on The Experience page.

Pretty Lights Music Videos

In the past week Pretty Lights came out with some awesomely trippy music videos on their youtube page. Most of them have random old school 60's and 70's video clips mixed in with equally retro trippy visuals. The visuals work really well with the music and heighten to psychdelic vibe Pretty Lights already has. The video for "Future Blind" is an artfully done portrayal of couple having a fight inside a color changing box. Pretty sweet stuff! See for yourself below:

The Killabits

The Killabits are a dubstep duo out of Toronto that make dank remixes. That's pretty much all I need to say- listen to some of my favorites below and check out their Soundcloud.

*O yeah, they went on a short tour with Zed's Dead and Skrillex- what an epic show that would've been, eh?

Katy Perry- Firework

Today at the gym Katy's Perry "Firework" came on and I have to say, I loved it. I had heard it before of course, but never really paid attention, after being fed up with the overplayed "California Dreams" this summer. Firework is a pop masterpiece. Katy Perry is probably my favorite pop star. I mean, Hot N' Cold? Does it get any better than that?
Anyway, I did a bit of research and discovered that there are some awesome remixes of Firework, and I figured I would share. Cheers!

RATATAT Live in London

Last night I saw RATATAT and it was unbelievable. For some reason, I had previously assumed that most of their music was made electronically, however this was not the case. They jammed real hard. It is bewildering and breathtaking how they can make such amazing and unique sounds with traditional instruments-- guitars, keyboard etc. My words can certainly not do this show justice. All I can say is that if you have an opportunity to see them, do it.

Below is a three part video of Wildcat that I took and I am going to post a bunch of other videos on The Experience page. Cheers!

Deadmau5- 4x4=12

Deadmau5's new album, 4x4=12 leaked about a week ago and its all I've been listening to. Sorry, I didn't blog about it sooner but I wanted to be fair to the artist and write about it the day it gets released in the US.
It is of course unbelievably epic. He experiments with a lot of styles from electro-funkiness on Animal Rights with Wolfgang Gartner, to dubstep on a few tracks, to trance (I Said), and of course house and progessive. But, it still all has that distinctive Deadmau5 sound. There are so many moments on this album that make you think "How is this amazingness even possible?" it defies any sort of reason.
The angsty dubstep ballad, "Raise Your Weapon," is one of the most rawly emotional songs I've ever heard and it is completely breathtaking-- a definite must-hear. There are two raver-raps with female hip-hopper SOFI-- One Trick Pony and Sofi Needs a Ladder-- and they are great because SOFI's frustrated rants match perfectly with the Mau5's fat beats. Then, there are a seemingly endless number of dank beats in songs like Some Chords and Right This Second. Deadmau5 is just unreal.
In short, get this album one way or another and blast it all day. You can buy it here.

Weekend Mix!

I am proud to give you Music of Manny's first ever Weekend Mix. This is something I've been thinking of doing since the summer (back when I put out the Weekend Playlist), but didn't have the technical prowess to pull it off. But, after a month or two of learning music software, I finally can do it. This mix starts off with some chiller music, then builds up into some house, and then finally melts into some dank dubstep. Enjoy!

iTunes Shuffle Playlist

Lately, I've been really into putting my iTunes or my iPod on shuffle. It's interesting to see what pops up and sometimes surprising when a song I haven't heard in ages or never heard comes up. I've got 120 gigs of music so alot of stuff is really random. I saw someone on Facebook do a game where they put their music on shuffle and wrote them down and then tagged 15 of their friends in the post. So, I decided to do something similar for shits and giggles. I wrote down 15 songs that came up in order and will share them with you in a little playlist. If this inspires anyone-make a playlist yourself- and hit me up with the results.
