The Roots- How I Got Over

This is my favorite album of 2010 so far. It smoothly flows with jazziness and cool, intelligent lyrics and has a variety of great songs. There is not really a bad song on the album. In hip hop today, it's rare to find an artist that can make smooth and sometimes catchy songs that also go beyond the superficial with serious themes. There are rappers like NAS, who embrace the serious, but don't really master the smoothness or the catchiness. Then there's the great majority that cling to the superficial. But, here we have The Roots, who take on it all. In "Dear God 2.0," they take the haunted vocals from the Monsters of Folk song and add depth with Black Thought's frustration with the modern world. "Radio Daze," one of the catchiest songs on the album, contemplates the changing life of the "satellite age." One of my favorites, the title song, laments over the ideological contradictions with success on the streets where "the first thing they teach ya is not to give a fuck." This album captures the problems of the 21st century from the streets up and still is a pleasure to listen to throughout.

If you like the album-- purchase on Itunes, on their site, or in stores.

Toyz Noize

I saw Toy Story 3 yesterday and it was really well done- a very clever way to end the series. In honor of that, I give you Toyz Noize by Pogo. Pogo only uses special effects and chords from movies to make his music. It's really inventive and painstaking work and I'd say wins the originality award for the week.

Also check out his mixes of "Up" and "Alice in Wonderland", and "Willy Wonka" below.

VIVA LA DEADMAU5

So there's a bit of e-drama in the techno world. Dubstepper Rusko and Deadmau5 have exchanged some expletive-heavy tweets (see below). It's pretty stupid but conflict is fun!

Team Deadmau5 ASSEMBLE!

Rusko’s twitter:
# so a dj with a HUGE ego last night threw a huge bitchy hissy fit at me last night for smokin weed in the backstage…
# I told him to fuckoff and he ran for some security like a little pussy bitch!!!!! 8 minutes ago via TwitBird
# @deadmau5 next time I see u ima snap u like a twig u skinny little CUNT 7 minutes ago via TwitBird
# @deadmau5 and I will fuckin see u… 7 minutes ago via TwitBird
# Ye I called u out diva bollock
And here’s Deadmau5′s side:
“i mean, props to him for ridding my tail to get himself some free publicity and all that… but are the threats really nesciscary? im not one to speak against people who “say stupid shit on twitter” … because i do it ALL THE TIME… i, however, have never, and will never threaten violence to anyone in that context. it’s fucking childish. so if the little child wants his attention… well look… he’s certainly got it. cool fuckin story bro… but why u mad? anyways, i hope he grows up and hopefully figures out that “making good music” sells your profile, and not making up some dumbfuck dressing room story and including my name in it for fuckin entertainment’s sake. and thats all im going to say about that.”

Top 40 Covers

I am a big fan of indie covers of top 40 songs. I like how they are able to strip down a heavily produced song and reinvent the music into something worth listening to and in some cases change the way you see the song. Lately, there's been a surge of these-- so, here are a few favorites.

Sia- Cooler Than Me (Mike Posner Cover)
Samuel- Find Your Love (Drake Cover)
Neon Trees- Baby (Justin Bieber Cover)

And some Kid Cudi covers:

Lissie- Pursuit of Happiness
Barbara- Pursuit of Happiness

This isn't a top 40 cover, but the most inventive cover on this list:

Blackbird Blackbird- Float On (Modest Mouse cover)

Miike Snow and Crookers

I like Miike Snow and I really like Crookers. So, when the two of the come together to make an awesome tune, its destined to be pretty great. And then when that tune is remixed excellently, its even better. See below.

Miike Snow and Crookers- Remedy (Bitrok Bootleg Remix)

Also, check out Crookers remix of Animal from a while back:

And my favorite Miike Snow remix from the Annual 2010:

Mochi Beats- Running In Your Arms Mashup

This mashup by Mochi Beats sticks to Gucci Mane through the song, but then surprises by seamlessly incorporating Radiohead, Cutting Crew's 80's classic " I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight". I'm not a big fan of Gucci Mane, but this mashup caught me off guard and it's definitely some quality work.

Flying Lotus Music Video

What if I told you that could feel like you were in the middle of an acid trip without consuming any substances? Would that be something you might be interested in?

If yes, then watch the Flying Lotus music video below. It's just a little bit trippy.

Sleigh Bells

Sleigh Bells is a band like no other. I've never encountered a band that could juxtapose sheer, unadulterated rock with pure, beautiful vocals as seamlessly as they do. The contrast is incredibly exciting, they will definitely keep you guessing and wishing for more. Songs like "Tell Em" and "Kids" are like fantastic energy shots- the energy is there but it isn't naseau inducing. On their album, "Treats," my two favorites are actually their chiller songs, "Run the Heart" and "Rill Rill." Run the Heart is the first song I heard by Sleigh Bells (in the form of the Bassnectar remix). It doesn't have the contrasts of sounds that many of the other songs do, but the song is driven by the rythmic ahh-ing of the lead singer and it is unique. The Bassnectar remix is also below and it will have you krumping all day.

If you like them, buy their album on Itunes.

Tokyo Police Club- Champ

I've been a fan of Tokyo Police Club ever since I heard their 2006 EP "A Lesson In Crime." The EP is filled with a fledgling post-punk band's vibrant and sometimes even forceful creative energy. Unfortunately, their 2008 album "Elephant Shell," was a disappointment with overly emo songs without the energy. The good news is that TPC has not lost it all. There are parts of the album (especially the beginning) that bring back the quality of music that got me into them way back in 2006. However, the album isn't perfect and there some weak spots where the album loses focus with mediocre tunes. Buy the album here and  check out the TPC highlights below:

Favourite Food- This is awesome first start to the album as it slowly but surely builds up.

Tokyo Police Club - Favourite Food by tohaly

Breakneck Speed and Wait Up- Both kind of similar, but also probably the two best songs on the album.

Heartbreaker

Right now, MSTRKRFT's remix of Heartbreaker by John Legend is numero 4 on Hype Machine. It's awesome, but Laidback Luke's remixed remix is even better:

Kid Cudi, Best Coast, and Rostam Batmanglij- All Summer

This song was the first on last weekend's playlist, but I feel like I have to reemphasize it. It's a collaboration between  Kid Cudi, Best Coast, and Rostam Batmanglij (of Vampire Weekend). It pretty much has anything you could want in a song: energy, lyrics, feel goodness, etc. The mix of Best Coast's beach pop style with Cudi was a brilliant choice and surprisingly, it was orchestrated by Converse for a marketing campaign (amazing it turned out so well). If the music world has any sense, this song will be the summer song of 2010 that people remember (please not California Gurls).

Acoustic Bulletproof

Bulletproof by La Roux is pretty sweet. It's been remixed a countless number of times and most of the remixes are goosebump-inducing. However, today I encountered a version completely unexpected...an acoustic! It's pretty rare to find an acoustic version of an electro-pop song that's worth listening to, but I've got to say this is quality. Find it below along with some of the top remixes of Bulletproof:

Home

This tune by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zero's sounds like folk-pop out of the 60's. It's got great lyrics, has an energetic give and take between the two singers, and it's been stuck in my head for the past week. Plus, how could you not like a song sung by a guy who looks like Jesus in the 70's?

Also check out the remix by RAC. This had been blogged a lot recently and it's what brought me to find the original. It changes the song very sublty but gives it more energy.

PVT

Check out PVT! They are an upcoming band from Australia and they play percusive electro rock with chant-like vocals. Kind of like a less hipster version of Yeasayer. This video below is my favorite song of theirs. Enjoy!

Edible Audible Picnic Strikes Again: El Guincho

Just went down to Millenium Park for Edible Audible Picnic and saw El Guincho. They are a two man act from Barcelona and play Latin-esque music by sampling. One guy plays the guitar, the other mixes and samples all of the music, and they both sing. Its some really unique stuff and an interesting example of inventive genre-fusion. It is self decscribed as "space-age exotica." Whatever that means, I like it regardless.

Justice- Phantom Pt. II Remix

Remix of Phantom Pt. II by Boyz Noize. It gets all Peter Frampton in the begining with a Vocoder and then around 1:30, it breaks out with some extra bass--Pretty dirty.

Deadmau5 @ Soldier Field Review

Deadmau5 at Soldier Field. That's all I really have to say--it  pretty much speaks for itself.
Nevertheless, I will divulge. Amazing, just amazing. Deadmau5's new cube stage set up is unreal. It adds so much to the visuals and the energetic production of the show. It can go from being a surreal space scene to projecting a seismic seizure-inducing fever of light in a second. Cooler yet, his various masks light up and he changes them to go with the lights- trippy.
Of course, it wasn't only about the lights, the music was also dank. Impressively, he was able to seamlessly integrate many of his songs together. This is no easy task especially when you consider how ecletic his music is. At one point he faded the trancesque "I Remember" into the headbanger "FML" and he did it pretty seamlessly too. With Deadmau5's wide range of great beats, he had a lot of room to mix and match to get the crowd going.
Speaking of the crowd--What do you get when you take Chicago ravers and put them into an outdoor Deadmau5 rave? INSANITY. It was a pretty wild crowd and no one stopped moving the entire concert. I don't think many people were disapointed with this show. Below are some videos I took of the show and you can get them all here.

Kid Cudi

Kid Cudi's second album, "Man on the Moon II" is due for relsease in September. Amazingly, he hasn't seemed to slow down at all this year. There has been a consistent stream of mixes and new releases and a lot of them are really strong. Hopefully this new album will follow through. The song below, "Erase Me," seems to take a different direction than Cudi's other stuff because it takes more of a pop-punk take. Even though it's different, I kind of like it.

Also, below is Cudi's first release from the album, REVOFEV, which definitely sounds like it could be a track from his first album but is still very strong.
